Doomben Racing Tips: Saturday 22 August Best Bets

Doomben runs a ten-race program on a Good 4 with the rail out two metres around the entire circuit. It’s a card built on runners either building through their preparations or backing up quickly, so recent trial form and fitness carry plenty of weight race to race.

Race 1 - BM68 Handicap (1600m)

Wrigley Field worked home strongly into fourth over 1350m last start and looks ready to take advantage of the step up to a mile, with barrier one letting him settle within striking distance. Bonewood arrives from Rockhampton lightly raced with talent on show, helped by blinkers going on and a light weight. Dust Cloud has won two of his last three with a dominant mile win last time out and should be strong late even from the wide gate, while Comin’hometoyou got back too far last start but worked home under a big weight and should relish the trip out to 1600m.

Race 2 - No Metro Wins Handicap (1200m)

Selection: Mean Approach

Mean Approach opened his campaign with back-to-back wins before feeling the pinch late when stretched out to 1400m last start, and he heads back to his right trip with a 3kg claim in his favour. Shelstein was narrowly beaten at 1350m last time and gets back to 1200m with useful weight relief. Mishani Moet won well two runs back and was simply unlucky last start, while Bonded Affair raced too fiercely fresh but showed genuine improvement in his most recent run.

Race 3 - BM72 Handicap (1350m)

Selection: Blazing Harry

Blazing Harry has been runner-up in both runs this preparation and looks the type to go one better now, with the rise to 1350m suiting, a 3kg claim in his favour and a low draw giving him every chance. Carravilla was run down late after leading over 1400m at the Sunshine Coast and has already won twice from three at this track and trip. Mishani Crown strips fitter third-up and drops in grade with the extra distance and low gate both working for him, while Arctic Legend was solid through the line fresh and should improve for the step up in trip.

Race 4 - BM80 Handicap (2200m)

Selection: Diamond Show

Diamond Show overcame some interference to score a deserved win last start over 2060m after three minor placings before that, and the rise to 2200m looks to play to her strengths. Fernao got back in a slowly run race last start but still fought on well for second, and he drops in grade with a 2kg claim and gear change added. Captain Maverick keeps racing well without saluting and looks fit enough to be right there again, while Chillaxing has won two of his last three and can’t be left out.

Race 5 - BM70 Handicap (1110m)

Petit Artiste steps out for a new stable and, as a stakes winner at two, she’s proven well above this grade - the 1100m opener looks the ideal starting point. Spiethtacular returns off a tidy fresh record and looked sharp winning a recent trial at this track, with a 3kg claim a bonus. Provance was solid through the line fresh over 1000m and gets a slight trip rise and low draw to work with, while Out Of Square felt the pinch late fresh at the Sunshine Coast and should take plenty of improvement from that run.

Race 6 - Class 6 Plate (1110m)

Let’sfacethemusic was too good at this track and trip two runs back and hit the line strongly last time when tackling open company from a wide gate, so a kinder draw and a drop back in grade make him hard to knock. Fleetwood returns fresh off a proven first-up record and a recent trial win at this track. Fukubana resumes with a strong first-up record of his own and has won three from four at Doomben, while Zoubaby has been too good at this track and trip before and clearly loves racing here.

Race 7 - No Metro Wins Handicap (1600m)

Selection: Land Bank

Land Bank has returned in fine order this campaign, proving too good second-up over 1350m, and the added fitness should carry him well through the mile. Luton Hoo won at this track two runs back and backed that up under a big weight last start, with an inside draw setting up a cosy run in transit. Ready To Ignite raced too keen in front last start but stuck on gamely for third and gets a senior rider and low gate this time, while Mirra Impact kept grinding away over the mile last start and looks fit enough to be strong again.

Race 8 - QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap (1200m)

Selection: Star Of Jamaica

Star Of Jamaica raced wide and hung out fresh over 1000m at this track, but he’s fitter now with blinkers added and the advantage of the inside gate. Maria Clara finished third in that same race with genuine merit, having been checked and held up before closing off well, and the rise in trip should suit. Huggie is a debutant primed by two solid trials, finding the line strongly in her latest, while Run Like A Girl did her best work late fresh over 1000m and should relish the extra furlong.

Race 9 - BM85 Handicap (1350m)

Selection: Acappella Sun

Acappella Sun strips fitter third-up and gets the run to 1350m to suit, carrying just 54kg despite the rise in grade. Rezone resumes off a top campaign last time in Queensland racing and is a natural fresh-up performer following a quiet trial. Surprise Honey bounced back to her best with a decisive win over 1200m at Eagle Farm last start, and the way she finished suggests the extra ground will suit, while Ser Joh was runner-up that day and gets a trip rise that should suit third-up.

Race 10 - Open Handicap (1600m)

Selection: Tenzing

Tenzing did enough fresh over 1400m at Eagle Farm without being a noted first-up performer, and his strong second-up record points to more improvement through the mile. Rising Pacific comes off a much-improved run at Eagle Farm and should get conditions to suit if the track stays dry. Anemacore beat this field last start in a similar race at Eagle Farm and is proven at the trip, while Express Payment is in career-best form and was beaten only a neck by Anemacore last time, with the mile expected to suit again.
