Best Bet
Under 194.5 total points at $1.90. Cairns have won all three home games this season, and the totals in those games were 180, 188 and 170. They have also conceded only 84 and 85 points in their last two games. Cairns are playing for the second time in three days, which should slow the pace, so we lean to the under. Their first meeting with United reached 202, which is why we are keeping this to a normal stake.
The reasoning
Melbourne are $1.40 favourites, and Cairns are $2.90 with a 5.5-point start. United are 4-5 but improving. They lost narrowly to Illawarra and Perth, then beat Sydney 105-95, holding the Kings to just 13 points in the third quarter. Cole Anthony scored 30 in that game and played more than 30 minutes for the first time this season. Chris Goulding returns from a calf injury, which adds another scorer. Sean Macdonald remains out.
Cairns are 6-4 and won the Round 1 meeting 107-95, hitting 15 threes. They beat Brisbane 107-85 on Thursday night with a club-record 20 threes. Jack McVeigh has averaged more than 20 points over his last four games, and Reyne Smith has 15 threes over the same stretch. Sunday Dech is out, but Jaylin Galloway is back.
United have the stronger roster and should be fresher, but Cairns are unbeaten at home and dangerous from long range. The 5.5-point start looks generous. That is the basis of our SGM.
Same Game Multi (SGM)
SGM (3 legs):
- Cairns Taipans +5.5 - unbeaten at home, beat United in the first meeting, and the start covers a narrow United win.
- Jack McVeigh 18+ points - has averaged more than 20 points a game over his last four after a slow start.
- Reyne Smith 2+ made threes - 15 threes over his last four games, including four against Brisbane on Thursday.
Combined price: $6.80
How we’d play it
The under is the main bet at a normal stake. If you prefer a side, Cairns +5.5 at $1.90 is a fair alternative, but Cairns can be inconsistent and United should be the fresher team. Keep the SGM stake small. Tip-off is 7:30pm AEDT at the Cairns Convention Centre.
