The tip

Philadelphia Eagles to win (head-to-head, $1.54). Chicago’s quarterback problems make the Eagles the right side, but Philadelphia’s own injury list suggests a close, low-scoring game, so we would rather back them to win than lay a line.

The reasoning

The Bears’ season changed when Caleb Williams went down with a hamstring injury. With him, Chicago scored 59 points in Week 1. In Week 2 they managed only three in a 9-3 loss to Minnesota. Their backup, Tyson Bagent, is in concussion protocol, so the start could go to Case Keenum, who has not been active for a game since 2023. The Bears also have a new running back mix, with D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai sharing the load. We think their offence will struggle to move the ball consistently against a well-organised defence.

Philadelphia are 2-0 after wins over Washington and Tennessee, and Saquon Barkley is back to full health after a stinger. However, they are far from full strength. Tight end Dallas Goedert and receiver Marquise Brown are out, both starting offensive linemen Fred Johnson and Landon Dickerson are missing, and edge rusher Jonathan Greenard is in doubt. The Eagles have been poor on early downs this season and have relied on converting third downs, where they rank near the top of the league. That is a hard way to build a big lead on the road.

The market has moved toward Philadelphia since the Williams news. The US line opened with the Eagles as small favourites and is now around 3.5 points, while one Australian bookmaker has offered Eagles -5.5 during the week. Totals are sitting around 41.5 to 42.5, and the last five games between these teams have all gone under that mark. Conditions at Soldier Field look fine, with no rain forecast and light winds, so the weather should not affect scoring.

Main danger: The Eagles’ patched-up offensive line struggles in a hostile Monday night setting and Chicago’s defence keeps the game close enough for a late turnover or field goal to decide it. Backup quarterbacks sometimes perform better than expected in their first start, so this is not a bet to over-stake.

How we’d play it

  • Main bet: Eagles head-to-head. The quoted price of $1.54 was posted before the line moved further toward Philadelphia, so expect it to be shorter now. Check the current price before betting.
  • The line: We would leave the Eagles -5.5. With the injuries on both sides, a close game is just as likely as a comfortable Eagles win.
  • Multis: The Eagles head-to-head is a reasonable leg, but not a banker, because of the Eagles’ injuries.
  • Check Chicago’s confirmed starting quarterback before kick-off. If Bagent is cleared to play, the gap between the teams narrows.
